Does My Story Matter?

Recovery has helped me become the best version of myself — better than I ever was before addiction. I never imagined life could feel this full, this meaningful, or this good.

988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline

24/7 free, confidential mental health hotline that connects individuals in need of support with counselors across the United States and its territories. People do not have to be suicidal to call. Reasons to call include: substance use disorder, economic worries, relationships, culture and identity, illness, intimate partner violence, depression, mental and physical illness, and loneliness.

What to Expect From 988

Veterans Experience Crisis too!

As family members of a service member, we often don't realize the expectation we put on our loved one by bragging or celebrating how strong, dedicated, and tough they are. I have been told: "It's hard to admit I am struggling with my mental health when I know I have siblings and my mom looking to me to be tough in difficult times and lead them with strength!"

The Military Crisis Line is a free, confidential resource for all service members, including members of the National Guard and Reserve, and Veterans, even if they’re not enrolled in VA benefits or health care.

Many of the trained counselors are also Veterans who understand the challenges service members and their loved ones face.

Overdose Prevention & Awareness

In Virginia and across the U.S., we are facing an opioid crisis. More Virginians die every year from overdoses than from automobile crashes; nationally, there is an overdose death every 5 minutes.

But there is hope, too: The crisis has inspired national action, from grassroots groups to states and the federal government. In Virginia, we’re taking steps toward recovery. Since 2016, when the state health commissioner declared the Virginia opioid crisis to be a public health emergency, state agencies and community-based organizations have responded, offering lifesaving resources to all Virginians.

The journey away from opioid misuse starts one step at a time.
